That's unfortunate, though I suppose it makes it easier for the powers that be (presumably the state boards and CLARB) to coordinate and ensure folks are qualified to take the exam in their state.  Hopefully they'll provide coordination of CEUs, better prep material, etc to offset the cost.

Did you actually see the word 'mandatory' ?   That you pay for a test and then have to pay to see the results doesn't seem ethical.  It wouldn't suprise me that the council record info was rewritten to lead you to believe it was mandatory.

Call your state board and find out if they can access your records from CLARB.  Someone else around here may know if this is true, but I believe that if you signed up through the state, then they will have access to your info at CLARB.

When I passed each test, I got the email from CLARB and then a letter from my state board.  Obviously, they were getting notified as well.

I never paid for a council record, but had to register for the multiple choice though CLARB. Yet, I was able to get all of my grades online well prior to getting the letter. I think if you paid for the exam through them, you can access your grades through them online. I still don't have a council record, as I see little value in it right now, especially in this economy. Mor people would have them if they were cheaper, Volume people, volume.

I could have written that a bit better...submitted the LA application to the state, and once approved signed up for the tests through CLARB...

Because the state (somehow someway) notified CLARB, the state is notified of/ has access to your results...and there is (in all probability) no need for a CR.

You don't pay to view the test results but you are now required to have a CLARB record in order to register for the tests in the first place (even if you've already been approved by a state board).  You don't even necessarily have to complete the record, just sign up and pay the $140 (plus $170 a year thereafter to keep it current and additional fees to actually use the record for anything).

Hi John- Registering for the September administration now, and just encountered the same issue. Very frustrating. This new requirement should be noted more prominently on the CLARB website. The Council Record info pages still explain the benefits of starting/maintaining a record, which seems moot now that one is required.

On the registration page, the CLARB website says states:

Starting with the September 2012 L.A.R.E. Administration, all candidates -- regardless of where they are seeking initial licensure -- will register for the L.A.R.E. on the CLARB website.

I'm curious- do we still have the option to register through our state licensing board? And, if so, is a Council Record required to do so?

Has anyone tried this for the September 2012 administration?

As I understand it we now are required to have (and pay for) a CLARB council record.  Previously all you needed was to be registered on the CLARB website and you could view your test results and register to take the LARE..

What CLARB seems to be reluctant to own up to is the fact that you will now have to pay them for an annual membership to register for sections of the LARE.  If you aren't banging out all 4 tests in the same CLARB membership calendar year you will add the CLARB membership fee to the new higher fees for to take the LARE for each year you are taking test.

In Virginia (where I am working on my license) requires you to register with the Virgina licensing board in Richmond before you can register to take the LARE. You will need to check with your state board to figure out what they require.

Why doens't the ASLA provide licensing tracking as a membership benefit. It sure would help to justify my annual membership with them.
