Hi everyone!
I recently stumbled across this Good Wood Guide, and I searched on some of the species that I know are used here (I'm working in Dubai)....
http://www.goodwoodguide.org.au/search.php
Meranti in my experience is the most widely used timber here, yet is ranked as a "bad" wood (all known supplies are from illegal and/or destructive logging) - yikes!!
Teak is ranked as slightly better, yet it's so expensive here....I know that most of my clients prefer the cheaper options. Bamboo is a "good" wood, but I only know of this available as a decking timber.
Any thoughts on this? Are better woods available here? What are we doing to encourage our clients and suppliers to consider the "good" alternatives?
Best wishes to all,
Jane Aldersley

go ogle chengal and resak. available thru proper channels in dubai. these tropical heavyweights are tolerant to the desert heat and have beautiful features. color and texture change with time. sourcing wise either from asia or africa, 'legal' is subjective.
You can try using IPE. This is a rainforest species plantation grown in South America. Verg good timber for external use. Sorry I do not have a supplier but I remember seeing samples in a couple of project meetings over the years, so it's possible to get in the GCC.
