Green Roof Experience with Lightweight Granular Drainage Layer

Started by Scott Radford Sep 21, 2011. 0 Replies

I'm looking to do an intensive green roof with a pumice granular drainage layer.  Can anyone point me to existing projects using a pumice granular drainage layer?

Look into Dusty Gedge.  I had the fortune of meeting this character a few weeks ago.  http://dustygedge.co.uk/index.html  He has a manual available for download (and a few dollars) that gives instructions on how to do 'gorilla green roofs'.  That is to say, inexpensive and great.  You may not need the plans for the structure that greenroofplans.com offers.  Geotextile, geomembrane (EPDM pond liner) geotextile, growmedia, plants, framing.  That's all you'll need for one that small - unless you've got a steep slope, then add retention.  It's at the bottom of his green roof page.

Anyone have a great source for construction drawings for green roofs?

We are doing a small (7' x 7') one on a micro residence/greenhouse/chicken coop.... so looking to build with small scale, cost effective/appropriate materials.

Green roof in the desert would be great...added insulation, sound attenuation - irrigate with graywater!  Are there precedent projects in the area?

What does everyone think about green roofs in the desert? Specifically the Mojave Desert? Given how much energy costs these days, would they not be beneficial? Or would the cost of having to irrigate them (which you would have to in the desert) be worth it?

If any of you are near the San Francisco Bay Area, we have a great presentation coming up on Residential Roof Gardens sponsored by the Association of Professional Landscape Designers. Click the link for details...

Hi. I'm going to build a green wall using felt as part of my student entry at the International Ellerslie Flower Show in NZ in March 2010. Any advice?
