Every project I design....regardless of whether it is a Residence, Commercial or Multi-Family Property......I begin with a "Preliminary Design (full color)".  AND, I include a detailed Preliminary Cost Estimate......because, everyone has a BUDGET.

After the Client "approves" the Preliminary Design and has reviewed the Preliminary Cost Estimate.....the Design moves to "Final Drawings" days, as autoCAD drawings.

I produced this Preliminary Color Rendering - Design for Mr. & Mrs. Howdy's Dallas Residence.  Color rendering was produced "By Hand".

The rear yard only is shown here.  When I did the on site survey....there were approx. 30 existing mature Live Oaks & Red Oaks...a few other trees and only a few shrubs...and a lawn.  So, I pretty much had a "clean slate" to work with here.

Working from a PLAT, Google Earth, digital photos I took at the site and measurements I took to locate all of the existing trees.....I was able to create this Preliminary Plan.

To me.....Landscape Architecture has always been about "communicating" our ideas to our clients. So, bold and colorful graphics have always seemed to be an important aspect of what we do. BUT, first, it's important to develop a very good and creative "design"....and then, couple it with strong graphics.  IMO, you just can't separate great graphics from a great design...they go hand in hand.

In producing this Preliminary Color Rendering.....I used "white" trace paper.  On the back side of the trace paper, I used "colored markers".  On the front side of the trace paper, I used black lines for all design items....colored pencils....label all aspects of the design...and I used bold shadowing to give the rendering more LIFE and appeal for the client.  Also, strong color graphics are very helpful for clients to understand the "design ideas".
