katrina replied to Ben Holmes's discussion 'ASLA dues'
"Hello, Yes I pay my ASLA dues, as i am a member on my local chapter's executive committee. Thee way i see it, many professions require you to pay dues, whether it is a professional organization or union or otherwise. It is something that I just…"

Dave McCorquodale replied to Ben Holmes's discussion 'ASLA dues'
"I'm not a member of ASLA or CLARB.  While it certainly seems like a legit business expense, I'd ask your accountant to be sure.  If you're an employee of a firm, they may also know the answer to that. Dave"

Robert Anderson replied to Ben Holmes's discussion 'ASLA dues'
"An interesting dialogue that has started based on a simple question about dues and if they are deductible. I would have to say that I'm on the other end of the spectrum. I have worked for employers who supported ASLA and paid the dues and…"

Andrew Garulay, RLA replied to Ben Holmes's discussion 'ASLA dues'
"As goes the economy, so goes our profession. That is not a bad thing on its own. Chuck with a truck only takes business from you or me if we are not worth it to the person paying the bill. That is not ASLAs responsibility or the governments…"

Ben Holmes replied to Audrey's discussion 'Need help deciding which college for undergrad?'
"My two cents is to go somewhere that is going to prepare you to be the type of Landscape Architect you want to be.  I was naive to this when I went to school.  I went to Oregon and they were heavier in the research side of the profession.…"

"Thanks for the responses.  I can relate to the sentiment here.  I have been in the same mindset for some years now.  What does ASLA do for me?  Is it there for the 1%?  I look at it as I pay $370/year for a magazine that is…"

Andrew Louw replied to Ben Holmes's discussion 'ASLA dues'
"Good luck justifying the cost. They have us cornered. As far as I can tell, the ASLA and CLARB do very little to justify the enormous fees they charge. To take the LARE today you are looking at $2,000 in fees alone (before state fees, study…"

"Not this one (paying dues). You can write off memberships to professional organizations."

Ben Holmes replied to Brandon Reed's discussion 'LARE TESTING HOAX!?'
"Why would I have a problem with a corporation based solely on profiting off of us and not promoting the profession?  I think it is awesome."

Ben Holmes commented on Brandon Reed's group 'L.A.R.E. - ANYTHING GOES'
"I am new to this site, but have to take advantage of being able to voice my opinion about the LARE. Is it just me or has this turned into more of civil engineering exam than a landscape architecture exam? I work at a primarily civil design firm and…"

Big Orange Tangles

This is so strange to me - something to admire yet also raises a LOT of questions about public safety, who did the real scale drawings and structural brainwork, etc.? Video is long, portion of interest starts at 2:05 on this "eco-artist"…Continue

Usage of Native Plant Material in Landscape Architecture 52 Replies

Can anyone out there recommend sites that would have somewhat scholarly papers on the use of native plants. I am looking for advocates of this practice and those who feel it is nonsense. I'm not looking for books, looking for papers. This for a side…Continue
