James Richards Interview on Travel and Urban Sketching

Your sketches have a very unique, fun style to them. How did this develop?My visual sense is undoubtedly shaped by the magazines and comics I read as a kid. I’d try to emulate the drawing styles of Mort Drucker, Ronald Searle, Paul Hogarth and others, so there’s some of that there. Also, the demands of my professional work as an urban designer has trained me over time to draw…See More

The 4th International Urban Sketching Symposium

The 4th International Urban Sketching Symposium was held last week in Barcelona, Spain.  It was attended by about 200 "registered" participants from 30 different countries; another 100 or so showed up from across the globe just to meet each other, draw together, and celebrate the urban sketching phenomenon.  My fellow ASLA member Richard Alomar and I were among the workshop…

Hello James;

Just read the comment you wrote me.  That's super that you've been able to set up that "sketching course" at UTA.  And, it's VERY refreshing to know that more & more LA programs are moving back towards teaching LA students the importance of "hand drawing - sketches".

Actually, when I enrolled @ Texas A&M in 1974 (after my 4 yrs. in the Navy)...I was very surprised that very few of my fellow classmates had taken ZERO art or architectural drawing courses....but, several got up to speed and have had very successful LA design careers. Of course, back then, there was no "computer software programs" to learn.

I have noticed that, I believe the first REAL computer generated full feature movie "The Last Star Fighter" early 1980's...that they began with hundreds of hand sketches, that were then converted to "computer graphic images".  And even recently, the movie "Prometheus" was handled in much the same way - fantastic sketches of the aliens, the spaceship, everything first "hand drawn".

When I interviewed (twice) with EDSA for a senior LA position back in 2005, I learned that that TOP LA firm begins the "design process" for ALL of their projects.....with "hand sketches" before they move on to computers - autoCAD, photoshop, etc.  And, I know, it just sounds like a lame excuse, but, over the years...I found myself so busy - up to my eyeballs with design projects, I didn't have time to personally learn autoCAD or other computer software - so, I continue to rely on my "hand drawing" skills......still works...*smile*.

Best Regards,

Bob

Hi Richard!

Absolutely FANTASTIC sketching & use of color!!!  I only WISH I could sketch nearly as well as you.  I'll be looking into purchasing a copy of your BOOK on Amazon.com.

My Dad was a very gifted Graphic Designer for over 35 yrs....though, most of the "style" of his work was more "photo realistic".  I really enjoy the loose, free style...the incredible "character" you give your sketches.

EVERY LA should own a copy of your book.....and LEARN to sketch.  Hand sketching seems almost to be a "lost art" among most Landscape Architects.  It's VERY refreshing to be able to see and enjoy your wonderful work!

Best Regards,

J. Robert (Bob) Wainner - Plano, Texas

Hi James, I could not thank you enough to add me as a friend. I must also tell you that your article ‘freehand renaissance’ in the ASLA’s magazine has inspired many of us here in Melbourne. I am also glad and cannot wait until your book is out. I hope I have the opportunity to get a copy with your signature on when I travel to the States next year (hoping… :P).
