"I want all my places to seem the homes of children and lovers. I want them to be comfortable and if possible slightly mysterious by day, with vistas and compositions appealing to the painter. I want them to be delirious in the moonlight.... I believe that there is no beauty without ugliness and that it should not be otherwise. Both are capable of stinging us to live. Contrast is more true to me than undeviating smugness. The chief vice in gardens is to be merely pretty."

-Fletcher Steele

Train Kept a Rollin'...

I can hear the trains from my bedroom window. Nashville has an incredibly long and rich history of railroading, but it has been decades since passenger rail service was offered. I can see the newly restored Union Station from my balcony, it has been restored to its former glory, but its former function remains lost. There is a high-end hotel, offices, and a couple of really cool restaurants, but no train station. This is probably the same station where Olmsted stepped off the… Continue

Hey Jay! Thank you for the nice comments about my page. Your sketch-up models are impressive. This web site is pretty cool. So, what's new?

We read A Clearing in the Distance for a class on the History of the Park Movement: from Central Park to the Santa Monica Mtns. A friend who is a journalist also recommended it. It IS interesting to find out about the designers' lives. If you visit Yosemite one of the visitor centers has a John Muir sketchbook. His life was interesting too. Thanks for the compliment on my sketches!
