"If possible Luke, I would recommend travel sketches over travel photography.  I find sketching to be a more sought after, rare skill.  Furthermore, sketches reveal more about what you are looking at and how you interpret a scene.…"

Jenn

Here is a bit of advice I was given early in my landscape career. I was my first job and I was doing winter maintenance, mostly pruning. My supervisor said to me "don't prune the pink buds". I thought that this was strange advice being that there was nothing blooming in December. My supervisor said "exactly" I'm referring to your finger tips.

Great advice!

Saw this on ASLA's website!  That's wonderful that you were on the team winning the award.   I hope you are doing well... I'm presently working in Paris but will be back in the Bay Area in February, hitting the ground again looking for a job.

Hello, I am a student with the Young Scholars Program at the University of Maryland. For a class assignment we are to interview a US landscape architect. I would very much appreciate if you wouldn't mind answering a few questions.

1 Why did you decide to study landscape architecture?
2 When given a project, from which cultures do you draw inspiration?
3 Which project that you have done so far, are you most proud of and why?

Thanks again if you do receive this message, my email is nathankim93@gmail.com

Last post, I yammered on a little about mentorship; something that I think is tremendously valuable and rare. Useful information doesn’t always come from “above”, though, and I think we’ve got a lot to learn from all levels – so this time I wanted to find out what it was like…

Mentorship

Posted on August 10, 2012 at 7:30pm 0 Comments

A mentor is a person who is more experienced than you are (in either the same field or a closely related one) who helps and guides you in your career. I thought this concept was simple enough until I had a few conversations with someone who’s direct supervisor is called his “mentor”. “Baloney!” I…

Six Pieces of Advice

Posted on July 24, 2012 at 7:30pm 0 Comments

I love how stuff comes together sometimes. I recently overheard a conversation between a firm principal and a prospective Landscape Architecture student. This principal probably spent 45 min answering questions, and gave out plenty of information about the profession. They reminded me of discussions I had when I was a student which got me…
