Hey John - I recently resigned from the Wildflower Center after 9 years to spend more time with my 7 month old son and pursue other opportunities. Throughout my career, my work has focus on incorporating natural systems (or mimicking their function) in the built landscape to achieve more sustainable outcomes - sometimes pushing a little further and actually creating regenerative system. For the last four years, I managed the Sustainable Sites Initiative and had the pleasure of working with soil, hydrology, materials, vegetation and human health experts from across the U.S. Since Sites is often more applicable to larger projects, I am interested in using the information we gained throughout the development of the Guidelines and Performance benchmarks and applying it to residential landscape and small site settings.

The majority of the landscapes in Austin are taking a piecemeal approach to sustainability - the use of native plants and rainwater harvesting is common. In some areas you will see LID practices being implemented to reduce stormwater runoff and increase infiltration but no one is really looking at the larger picture and the multitude of benefits that can be derived. I hope to help folks move in that direction.

Quick question - I am new to Land8Lounge and still learning the culture - are folks interested in the topic of landscape sustainability in this residential group or should I just go bug the SSI and LEED groups?

Take care,

Heather
