In all honesty, do employers really pay great attention to your actual designs when reviewing a portfolio or do they mostly look at the ability to communicate your ideas?  I guess the reason I'm…Continue

I'm a recent graduate exploring career opportunities and I was wondering what are the pros and cons of being a landscape architect vs. landscape designer.

Inspiration for Design

Sometimes I find myself completely out of ideas that are outside of the box.  Personally I find inspiration sometimes from paintings but I'm wondering where inspiration for your designs comes from?

"I would definitely use Photoshop for all of my vegetation.  I find that using sketchup for trees slows my computer down a lot. If I must have 3D trees I use sketchup or Rhino to create a basic mass model and then I texture it using Artlantis on…"

"It can depend on the firm. A smaller firm in which you will likely have more immediate input may look closer at your design chops in the hopes that they can pass along some design work to you right away, as I did with my assistants. I…"

"Don't worry about the design aspect of the job. Your going to hired for your drawing skills. if you're good on the computer, then you have a shot at a job. you won't be designing for a while. Good luck."

Another Portfolio Question.

In all honesty, do employers really pay great attention to your actual designs when reviewing a portfolio or do they mostly look at the ability to communicate your ideas?  I guess the reason I'm asking this is because I know my graphics, layout, cad skills, photoshop skills, 3D skills etc are pretty good but I feel like my designs are not that great.  My professors have always liked my graphics and layouts but when it came to the actual design, I was something average.  Even in Construction, I…See More

Juan Antonio Lopez replied to Melanie Reber's discussion 'Is it just me... or do we need to rethink our illustrative quality of figures in the landscape?'
"I think that these days, everybody's digital graphics look exactly the same.  They all have the cutout trees, desaturated people and so forth.  I think sketches really convey more emotion and add a personal style to a rendering.…"

With just one month left before the competition closing date, the excitement is mounting and we are really looking forward to seeing all of the projects.

The closing date for the competition is 10 June 2011 so you have until then to :
pay entry fee
fill out and submit entry form
submit your project.

However I am recommending that people might consider submitting their entry fee and entry form in advance so that these documents can be checked and verified in order to guarantee that entrants are registered for the competition in good time.
