I have used both CAD and SketchUp for base set up, but it seems like I only use SketchUp nowadays. Most of the drawings I do fit onto 11x17, and some sketches need to be drawn bigger 18x24 (but very rarely). The basic eye level sketch can take as short as 8 hours (most of the time 12 hours) and the most complicated aerial can take 32 hours. Of course, within the time frame I'm sending clients drafts, and meeting to make sure the sketch is moving in the right direction.

Wil, the projects I worked on that were like the ones you have shown were strictly in AutoCAD, and didn't really have overlays. The ones I'm working on now, which do, I will put up once more complete. I'm pretty excited for it...I'm using GIS shapefiles from (DC GIS) for my base line info and world referenced satellite image files for the "aerial". Once done, I will share. I will also have one that we have made for Howard County, MD, that has some of the shapefile data converted to 3D objects for a video flythrough...all through Vectorworks.

Wil, I like the images you have shared. My previous job included similar projects in central OH. I'd be curious to know your workflows and if they were similar. I have taken world referenced/satellite images and used them as an underlay to the work I do in Vectorworks.
