Contact Congress to Restore Funding For National Mall

I received this email from ASLA about the stimulus package and want to help get the word out to everyone on Land8lounge.

On Tuesday evening the House Rules Committee stripped a provision from the stimulus package that would have provided $200 million to refurbish the National Mall.

Please contact your Congressperson and Senators and urge them to restore this critical funding for our National Mall. This much-needed funding would not only help to address the $350 million… Continue

Covering the Middle East Landscape: Nada Abdel Khalek

Last fall, I had the fortune to get an email from the editor of Landscape, The First Specialised Landscape Magazine in the Middle East, asking me to contribute to the magazine based on some of the items that I had been writing about on my blog. This gave me the opportunity to correspond with Nada Abdel Khalek, who wanted me to write a monthly contribution to the magazine. I have… Continue

Spatial Artifacts: Eckbo Uncovered

{Bay Lido Building Pocket Park, 1958, Garrett Eckbo. Apologies for the poor quality. Image Via: Modern Landscape for Living}

Friend, neighbor, fellow OSU alum, and landscape architect Kevin Newrones, while reading Modern Landscapes for Living, realized that one of the photos featured in the book was a 1958 Garrett Eckbo pocket park that stood just up the road from our homes.

In general, the notoriety of acclaimed landscape… Continue

Mr. Rogers Green Neighborhood

Recently, I happened to be flipping through the channels and I happened upon an old episode of Mr. Rogers Neighborhood, one that originally aired on April 16, 1999, and yet it looked so very old. I would've kept going but it had just started and I saw the title of this particular episode "Mr. Rogers Talks About the Enivornment". And it was in fact one episode out of a whole weeks theme on caring for the environment and taking a look at how children can work together with their parents to help… Continue

What is my landscape?

I've been wanting to add this album for quite awhile but have been too busy to get on to it. Anyway this is a powerpoint presentation I gave to my team some years ago now but the past hasn't changed, my journey hasn't changed. It is a presentation of images that illustrates the places I've lived and the experiences in those places that have sculpted my life journey as a landscape architect. The emphasis in on places that I've lived or worked for a significant amount of time and does not include… Continue

The Govinator is Govinating the LATC out of Commission

California is essentially bankrupt. I have long heard of complaints of political jargon amongst our elected officials and their petty differences have created little resolve in the state's problems. Now it would seem that lack of efficiency has trickled down to directly effecting the Landscape Architecture profession.

Governor Schwarzeneggar has released a roadmap for his proposals to resolve the government efficiency and budgetary problems. Tucked peculiarly in between two unrelated… Continue

From Low Riders to Landscapes: a few burning questions for Steven Chavez

by Adam Regn Arvidson, ASLA

www.treeline.biz

On his road to landscape architecture, Steven Chavez has experienced a lot: the southern California hot rod scene, a top international design firm in Seattle, severe bodily harm. As founder of two-year-old Los Angeles-based design firm SCA-larc (that’s pronounced “scale arc”), he is currently at work on several… Continue

Following Graduation I FInd Myself...

...still jobless but atleast I am happily traveling Italy!! It's amazing to see all these wonderful places that I have sat in lectures hearing about. I believe it's extremely important to travel to these places and see what has been successful design for so many years. So for any students reading this, if your program offers a study abroad to Italy... or anywhere, take it!! I learned more on mine to Ecuador than I did in any classroom and wish I would have done the Italy one also. Will post… Continue

The Big Chill

As landscapers and gardeners up and down the country shake off their festive hangovers and head back out - we find that country is frozen solid - but surely we aren’t ALL down in the dumps about 2009?

So I’m back at the Bat-Cave now after a lovely past few weeks and I am working my way through all the mail and emails that have mounted up on my desk and desktop resepectively. I’m a little bit annoyed that my last post’s optimism had it’s wing shot by the announcement a… Continue

Innovative ‘Lifestyle Centers’ - Let’s challenge ourselves

An interesting White Paper has been written by Karl Kalcher of MindFolio, a marketing strategy firm and published by Cornell’s Center for Hospitality Research.

The paper calls for developers of new “town centers” and “life-style centers” (oh - I really dislike those terms) to leave the beaten track and resist repeating the mistakes of the past. What are the mistakes?…making soulless places that have nothing to do with their community or surroundings and then copying it again and… Continue

I am a Year 2 Student doing a Degree in Landscape Architecture in RMIT, Melbourne. I have got an one and a half years exemption for doing Horticulture and Landscape Management in Singapore.

I have only done one semester in Melbourne. I have to say it has been an amazing experience to be able to study in a foreign country. I struggled quite a bit during my first semester. The style of learning is rather different from how it was back at home. Not being very literate with the softwares… Continue
