As a retired teacher I might tell you that if you are interested in teaching in the present and possibly worsening economic situation, you might consider teaching out of field for a year or two depending on the teaching out of field rules in your area. I did teach out of field once and it landed the most prestigious job in the county during that…[Read more]

Sythetic Turf fields currently have a standard 10 year life span. Sythetic Turf is more expensive to install but not as much as you might think.
For example a standard rectangle field with turf and irrigation runs about $800 k installed in our region (Mid-Atlantic)
A synthetic field runs around $1 mill. There are maintenenance savings, but not…[Read more]

Ed, if you are able to attend the Florida ASLA conference this weekend, there are LARE review classes being taught, and I believe the Florida Section is a focus. Best of luck.

I beleive concerns over Synthetic Turf are valid and should be investigated further, but I am not willing to throw out an entire product over a few very small studies.
It would be beneficial to see more and arger studies.

The correct industry term is Synthetic Turf.

Hi Robert, did you ever send any information to Ed? I wold like to get a copy if possible. I have been to the DEP webpage and the length of study material is overwhelming. A person would need to study for 6 months with that amount of material. Any assistance would be great.

Good Morning Ed….I am in a similar situation and I am looking for materials or a discussion with someone about Section F for the FL exam. Did you find any information worth sharing and have you taken the exam? I need to pass first go around and would like to discuss the test with someone that has taken it. Any help would be greatly…[Read more]

It is very easy and each sheet is ready to plot every time you open the tab. I also viewport the titleblock information so that it only needs to be updated in one place and shows up on all of them. This method evolved from taking different practices from different offices that I worked at to make it as easy as possible to manage drawings. Viewport…[Read more]

Daniel Miller replied to the topic What Graduate Degree would you recommend as the best complement to an Undergrad in Landscape Architecture? Pros and Cons? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 15 years, 10 months ago
I’d say it depends on your individual interests and what you want to get out of it. If your undergrad tailored more towards the practical side of the profession then maybe you pursue a graduate degree from a school that is more theory based. If you’re interested in natural systems then there’s always horticulture, urban forestry, hydrology,…[Read more]

Modified National CAD Standard…
For small jobs, I like to block in the base files (because I generally have to modify and correct them anyway) in order to get proper line weights and to actually close all of the shapes properly. I also dump the 3D data as it becomes just too cumbersome to deal with when you add a few hundred other blocks for…[Read more]

It depends where it comes from for the office I’m working at now. We save the original as a record and rename a working copy with our firm name in front, ie ‘TBG_surrounding base.dwg’. We usually keep the name as recieved it from the consultant unless its a really convoluted name. I’ve found that civils and surveyors in particular around here have…[Read more]

A Masters of Landscape Architecture, duh..from Harvard GSD of course.
Sorry, I felt compelled. If I could afford grad school I might consider something like environmental engineering. Others I’m sure will suggest an MBA.

Hey Blake I graduated this past May from LSU!
April, go to LSU, it changed me alot. You are going to have a different experience than most because of the age and maturity difference. I loved LSU, lead me straight to a great job. The program is ranked so high, the best teachers, everything really. (besides the occasional hurricane, or oil ball)

I graduating in May, just started a new job. Thats the most diffucult thing, to wake up each day and check the email, and recheck and recheck and recheck. All it takes is one person, one connection. Have to keep your head up. I felt the exact sameway.

If we’re working with an architect, we usually take their building footprint, put in our layers under our naming convention and trace and poche it. The output we’ve been getting from revit is certainly not perfect. It looks like really bad drafting, so it can be difficult to discern what to trace, etc.
Then the civil does the same thing, but a…[Read more]
