Thirty years ago, I sent out 30-40 resumes and got one very short response… no one else answered at all. The lesson. Don’t send out a resume and expect a response. Many offices get several resumes a week…. it can be a burden trying to respond to them all.
To get a job, you need to know the name of the person you are writing to… Dear Sir or…[Read more]

“Time and Materials (not to exceed)” is your best option.
Keep it simple, $300 is a pretty small job, and charge an hourly rate plus material costs as line items. If your client is concerned about the cost you can set a ‘not to exceed’ price so no one gets burned. If they cant agree to those terms on a $300 job you dont want it.

Tim, your portfolio looks great.
I really like the greyscale layout and bold typeface. The cover is excellent in my opinion.
After a quick glance I might say that the layout is a bit static. I like the grid layout and simple organization. There’s a pretty clear hierarchy and transition between projects, but I feel like some of your imagery could…[Read more]

Tim,
As I have recently been involved in a thread about someone’s folio and saw others popping up, I stopped by to do exactly what you’ve already done with this thread! Great minds I guess.
Anyway I know what you mean about call backs. i do however have a nice pile of rejection letters to keep me company. I suppose thats better than no contact…[Read more]

Does anyone have any small job contract samples they’d like to share?
I have a BLA (’08), very little experience, and no current job but I’ve managed to scare up a couple of small “side” jobs that will help with cash flow and work experience until the economy gets better (fingers crossed!). I plan on charging $300-400 for something that will…[Read more]

I’m a student too so I can’t give you advice on what most LA firms are looking for right now but I thought that this article might be of use to you. http://www.studiomezz.com/10-inspirational-resources-for-print-digi… The first couple of links will take you to print landscape architecture portfolios. I highly suggest checking out Lulu and Issuu…[Read more]

When I finished up at CPP I had a wide array of projects — ranging from 1st year VoF to 4th year senior projects. It doesn’t/didn’t matter what format or medium the original project was done in, but in my opinion you’re better off laying it out in InDesign or a program you’re comfortable with and creating a solid package that you can present to…[Read more]

SketchUp 15 years, 10 months agoAnother great talk by Daniel. Since I’ve worked with Sketchup previously to bring in contour and other information from AutoCAD the small tips such as
* wblock the different layers in AutoCAD,
* make sure trees and things are blocks,
* create a standard measurement line (for use to orient the group horizontally once in Sketchup),
* make sure the…[Read more] -

SketchUp 15 years, 10 months agoThis information is awesome. Even though you cover a lot, it is very clear. And knowing that I can review it at my own pace makes me relax, not worry about note taking, and really understand. Thank you so much for this.

I can’t answer any of your questions Tom, but I’ve noticed a reduction in numbers of positions being advertised by recruitment firms especially in europe and the middle east. A survey of these business’s may be one means to establishing a clearer picture and they should be able to give you a percentage figure from the last 5 years which I guess is…[Read more]

Unfortunately, we do not see a lot of the former type.

I see. I guess living in Denver I get used to seeing a lot more of the former type of graffiti and and forget that there is a malicious contingent of that culture.

Great post, great perspective, and I am glad to know that there are some firms like yours still around. A bright point in a bleak year. Thanks.

Not easily outsourced? Try again….. China and India and other countries in which 20 bucks-per-day is “good” are becoming a common source for just this sort of work. Owner or Manager does some sketch and then some CAD monkey in some third-world country cranks it out in the wee hours for peanuts and does the quick turn-around back to the US. No…[Read more]
