… also, I hate to say this, but even in landscape architecture a PhD is required for many teaching positions. If you want to teach, you may want to seriously consider that route, especially in this day and age where jobs are few and far between.

hi there.. beyond networking, you may also want to try teaching at the ‘extension’ courses at your local college. Here in Berkeley we have UC Extension… college courses that offer certificates and classes in many areas including landscape arch/design and community colleges too… some schools may call these adult courses and what not.
The point…[Read more] -

Yes! Just got a job. Hours may be variable from 20-50 depending upon work load. But, it’s real design work and I’m psyched to get this ball rolling.

What’s wrong with this picture? It appears that the hula dancers are beckoning riders to park their bikes here. However, it is to no avail. This was taken on the opening day of Trader Joe’s in Larkspur, […]

Ha! anecdotal evidence, Mr. McDonald! Harvard is WAYYYY worse than Penn, of course, because it’s Harvard..and that is strictly based on nothing..
and yes, Nick..who will make you the most money..I geuss it depends on where exactly you need help..I once didn’t hire a guy because he had an earring..I’ll just leave that lay there..nothing else to say.. -

Have any of you read the job requirements for some of those LA jobs that the Army Corp. of Engineers advertises? Its like you’d need at least a minor in hydrology and many years of experience doing specifically the job they are advertising to qualify! Makes me think they only promote from within. I met one LA who was with the Corp. a few years ago…[Read more]

Some years ago I ran into a guy from the class one or two behind mine. He had started his own design/build deal right out of school and was continuing with it some 10+ years later. he was trying to get licensed and was petitioning the state board to allow him to sit for the exams with the argument that there were no jobs under licensed LAs when he…[Read more]

Hi, I may have part of your answer: It appears you are located in a university town (Athens, Ga) or at least near one, as am I… located in Berkeley, Ca, (UC Berk)… These cities have MLA’s graduating every year, looking for jobs in the area before they move on to another place. Therefore the employer can advertise for this seemingly endless…[Read more]

I think likeablity would be one factor, Mr. Schmid – addmittedly perhaps a big one – Japanese youths are apparently egaging with frequency in cosmetic surgery, to help with the hiring process.
However, I think one can’t disclude the value of a study – even just to see if there are any correlations to anything..yes it can be skewed, but yes also, a…[Read more] -

It would be nice to introduce some hard facts into this debate. The data required would be fairly self-evident: Gather course work requirements for all BSLA degrees and compare with course requirements for MLA programs. Gather information from help-wanted, etc. for LA’s on requirements, and who gets hired. Gather information on other types of…[Read more]
