Good call. Sedges are wonderful. Do you have one in particular that you favor?

Excellent suggestions! I was curious about Aristida, but I have not seen it used so I was a bit hesitant. Do you have any pictures of it in one of your designs?
Thanks again!

I agree with Rob H. on this one – be sure to check out the sedges. They also tend to be very fine textured. Also Sporobolus airoides – like the sedges, not hair-fine like the Nassella. The Aristida is gorgeous, though if you can get it. I like it better than the Nassella!
Also check Festuca mairei – very similar to the Aristida. I’ve used it…[Read more] -

Precisely why I am all for the exclusive use of native to your area plants, especially is large scale projects. Why fight what nature has adapted to for your area? Have some pride in your bio-region!
I am seriously considering starting a native tree and shrub nursery, its unfortunate that a vast majority aren’t available.

Glad you liked it!
That competition was a bit unusual of course but if you look at the different submissions it does give you lots to think about.

ASLA at least has the option of paying the dues through monthly bank account deductions. A little less painful. ASLAs annual convention site says they expect over 6,000 LAs attending. Any comments?

It seems to me that putting too many details into a zoning ordinance causes more problems than it solves. The more detail that is written in, the less discretion the boards have to use. The thing that makes success is flexibility, at least to some point.
We have several specialized zones in one of the villages. They are so specific that they keep…[Read more]

Thanks Steve.
I’m excited at the possibility of implementing some of the new methodologies I’ve learned about here in the real world. Call me a nerd, but I think this is all pretty exciting.

Good luck, Nick! I’m extremely high on the SmartCode for many reasons. It really is the biggest revolution in coding since the Euclidean code. FWIW, I developed the Sky Method as a highly incremental development mechanism that bypasses the broken American development financing system by developing in tiny nibbles, not broad strokes. Check it out…[Read more]

As I understand, Barry, this is the basic premise of the Smart Code. (?)
We’re just about to get started in working on writing new Form-Based/Smart Code for a small, rural town in Colorado. It will be bboth mine and my bosses first experience with it, but I’m very optimistic.
The project was actually brought to us by a private developer. We had…[Read more]

That’s hilarious Noah. I never heard that.
In my mind that is a perfect example of what we’re driving at with regard to the shortcomings of our professional organization to, well…organize.
It’s now coming out as I’m interpreting that ASLA has been doing som internal reshaping, which is all fine and good, but I hope future actions are more in…[Read more]

yeah that’s what i am thinking… other than SketchUp, the learning curve on 3D max has got to be significant, and to just keep up with maintaining those computer skills seems a bit stifling, and cost to own them all… it seems the rendering programs such as 3D max are more for architecture/interior animation. Not sure why a client would want to…[Read more]
