I’d like to add a definitive “uuuuhhhhh, ok”. I have worked for a both a public planning agency and a planning and architecture firm here in Columbus so I’ve seen both sides of this coin (albeit to a somewhat smaller extent due to my so far short and sputtering career.) I would agree that good design and planning are done by a cooperation between…[Read more]

University of Cape Town MLA students 15 years, 11 months agoHey everyone. I’m not sure if this is the appropriate place to be inquiring, but I wanted to start with students first. I’m currently entering my final year of study for my BLA at Pennsylvania State University. I’m greatly interested in attending UCT in pursuit of my MLA, but I wanted to get some first-hand impressions and opinions before…[Read more]

I’m not saying I expect the ASLA to really do anything to alter the overall economic situation or be the sole driver in publisizing the proffession, or that we have a greater (or lesser) role to play than other fields. All I’m really getting at is that when I see a story on the environmental/ecological impacts of any design, I assume I’m not going…[Read more]

Jason, it’s most predictable at either extreme. At one end is the suburban pad site, not walkably connected to anything. We can accurately predict the maximum number of building occupants and the cars it will take to get them there. At the other end is a highly mixed-use, compact, and walkable neighborhood where there are many things to walk to…[Read more]

I’ve seen the opposite with regards to the parking, very often you need MORE parking. This is due to the residents keeping their cars parked all day, and then you add the outside traffic. There is no reliable formula for it, as parking needs vary wildly from development to development. It is totally dependant on the ratio and type of housing unit,…[Read more]

You can tell by the roof, It’s McD’s old prototype design. Building as logo.

FWIW, this was Galina Tachieva’s submission to ReBurbia. She’s writing a book, which should be released shortly… it’s the Sprawl Repair Manual. As for the parking, what we’ve seen repeatedly is that the parking requirements go down for places that are mixed-use. A few people (like me) actually walk to work, so I don’t need two parking spaces…[Read more]

RFox, I think most SketchUp users have no need for working with rendering or animation programs. SketchUp is great for conceptual models, but serious animators use max or maya. For most on this board, mastering 25% of what SketchUp will do is more than what they need from the 3D world.
Good luck with your BIM project. We don’t use Revit nearly as…[Read more]

Rybczynski’s comments are great arguments for code reform. Government should set the pace via coding that allows for developers to fill in the details via small incremental changes over time. Centralized control and big government projects are something Americans decry and for good reason. To be responsible citizens we ought to be designing places…[Read more]

Ha. very funny. Maybe it’s a medical center. Or a gym/bar for the people living in ths housing on the street. We liked to use ‘artists lofts’ as a possible flex use type space, when working on the City of charlottesville Zoning ord. Artist lofts – or magic wand stores..

When the high end restaurant left because the customers could not find it, did not like avoiding the kids skateboarding in the parking lot, and the buying power of the “walkable” demographic only allowed for fast food.

Agree with the 15′, but I take this graphic much more diagramatically. When did the back building become a McDonalds?

Unfortunately I have not projects in BIM. Currently in my working life parametrics/BIM remain an outside interest that I do when I can. That said, I do have an upcoming outside project coming up that I am going to try to use Revit or DP for. Though I foresee frustration levels rising. I could see a decent use for DP being in the conceptual stages…[Read more]
