SUMMARY:Rocky Mountain Scholarship
DESCRIPTION:Since 2009\, the JSR Foundation has provided scholarship support to landscape architecture\nstudents throughout the Rocky Mountain Region (Colorado\, New Mexico\, Wyoming\, Utah\, Idaho\, Nevada)\, and\nhas historically recognized exceptional student projects. For 2022 we are expanding the scope of the scholarship\naward to include two possible tracks:\n1. STUDENT PROJECT: To recognize a completed student project that demonstrates excellence in the field\nof landscape architecture\, OR\n2. COMMUNITY SERVICE: To support student work with community organizations\, municipalities\, and\nnon-profit institutions which would benefit from student assistance with design or research that they\nwould not typically be able to afford.\nAward: up to $5\,000\nAward amount will be determined by board members of the Jane Silverstein Ries Foundation\nNotes: JSR can discuss alternate payout schedules if required. Please note budget and special circumstances (if\nany). Travel stipends may be available for out-of-state awardee to showcase their application’s Boards at the\nASLA Annual Gathering in Fall 2022. Please note this need in your application form.\nTRACK 1 | Student Project Award Judging Criteria:\n• Effective investigation of the subject matter;\n• Illustration of best methods for improving the standards and practices of landscape architecture;\n• Evidence of reflection and concern for environmental\, cultural\, historical and other contextual issues;\n• Integration of both practical and aesthetic aspects of landscape architecture;\n• Significance of the study/project to the Rocky Mountain Region.\n• Creative or inventive solutions that challenge current accepted methods and means within design\npractice\nTRACK 2 | Community Service Award Judging Criteria:\n• Potential for students to apply skills developed in their landscape architecture program through direct\ninvolvement with projects that address community needs;\n• Capacity for integrating student interests with existing community concerns and topics of critical interest\nto the future of landscape;\n• Exposure to new challenges or methods of working that can complement the skills students are learning\nin their degree program;\n• Evidence of reflection and concern for environmental\, cultural\, historical and other contextual\nissues;\n• Significance of the service/project to the Rocky Mountain Region.\nEligibility:\nThe competition is open to all students of an accredited landscape architecture program (BLA or MLA). Only\nindividual submissions will be accepted\, and each student is permitted one entry in either category (project or\nservice). Collaborators and associates of members of the jury\, and their relatives up to the third degree may not\nenter the competition\nSubmission requirements:\nSubmissions must adhere to the following:\n• Include a project title that indicates the nature of the project\, or community service partner.\n• In 500 words or less\, describe the project and how it meets the award criteria. This statement may be used in promotional materials if the project is selected for an award.\n• For the Project Track: Include a site plan\, plus 5-10 drawings and/or photographs. All images must be 8.5×11” format and landscape orientation. Captions of no more than 50 words each are to be placed at the bottom of each image. If the project is selected for an award\, high resolution images will be requested.\n• For the Service Track: Include a description of the work or project to be supported\, including anticipated hours and timeframe\, and final objective or outcomes. A minimum of 125 hours of service should be provided. Diagrams or images of your intent are welcome\, but not required.\n• Only electronic submittals will be accepted. Please email completed projects in a single PDF file not to exceed 10MB and 10 pages to JSRScholarship@gmail.com. The first page on the PDF should be the declaration form.
