Starting Salary Range: $65,000 – $78,000

Role Summary

Senior level position in Parks and Recreation Services, whose role is to manage and oversee capital planning and projects for the Ann Arbor park system.

Duties

Duties are performed under the direct supervision of the Parks Manager or designee and may

include the following:

Essential Duties

  • Perform landscape architecture design, construction and contract administration, which includes park master planning, renovation and the development of parks
  • Long term planning for the park system and development of park amenities
  • Prepare proposals and requests for qualifications of all projects involving consultants and contractors
  • Evaluate proposals, select & hire consultants, prepare contracts and oversee projects
  • Project management- including surveying, environmental testing, material testing, structural evaluations, building assessments for code compliance and long term planning
  • Grant writing and grant management, including researching availability of grant sources
  • Significant public outreach such as preparing reports, coordinating with the communications unit to prepare press releases and notices, update website and signage to inform the public about capital projects and planning initiatives
  • Provide presentations to the Park Advisory Commission and other Citizen groups
  • Lead public meetings
  • Develop, produce and oversee the update of the Parks and Recreation Open Space Plan (Parks Master Planning document)
  • Coordinate and oversee construction projects at recreation facilities, parks, and natural areas
  • Prioritize projects for short and long term planning
  • Propose projects and policies that contribute toward sustainability
  • Supervise seasonal staff and interns, along with provide training
  • Review existing policies concerning park planning
  • Coordinate with city service units, county and state agencies regarding policy, objectives and planning
  • Knowledge of current code compliances and safety guidelines as they apply to projects in Parks & Recreation
  • Cultivate opportunities to promote the Parks & Recreation system, capital projects, and planning initiatives
  • Review development site plans for parkland donations, bicycle parking compliance and pedestrian circulation
  • Participate with development review team and work with other service units to provide input on development plans
  • Independently perform assignments with direction as to the general results expected

Related Work

  • Perform work that involves conventional landscape architecture practice, but may include a variety of complex features, maintenance practices, and challenging coordination requirements
  • Work requires a general knowledge of principles and practices of related specialties such as engineering and architecture
  • Responsibilities typically include any of the following: prepare construction plans, contract specifications, review of legal documents, write communications with City Council, and project reports

Equipment

City vehicle, standard survey equipment, mallet, standard drafting equipment, camera and other miscellaneous office equipment.

Training and Experience

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or Master’s degree in landscape architecture from an LAAB- accredited program
  • Minimum of eight (8) years experience in landscape architecture practice.  Post graduate education in landscape architecture or related field can count towards up to three (3) years of this requirement

Licensing Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Professional Landscape Architect License in the State of Michigan or the ability to obtain one in less than six months from the date of hire

Physical Requirements

Positions in this class typically require: reaching, standing, walking, driving, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, seeing, and repetitive motions.

Essential duties require the mental and/or physical ability to: work in a standard office environment; read fine print on construction drawings; the work requires the ability to distinguish colors; converse by telephone, two-way radio, in person, or around the noise of heavy construction equipment.

The incumbent may be required to traverse on rough, uneven terrain, as well as wet and slippery surfaces to access work areas. The work may occasionally involve the ability to perform light lifting (up to 30 pounds) and to remain in a sitting position for extended periods of time. Incumbent will be required to carry survey equipment, measuring wheel and tape, rolls of drawings, boards and easels. Will be required to pound stakes into the ground with a mallet.

Sedentary work: Exerting up to 30 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time.
