I think there is a project in Minnesota; the City of Minnetonka’s new Government Center is using a solution which might work for you. A large bioretention area takes runoff from a large parking lot. Instead of permeable pavers, or curb cuts which would seem to follow recent trends, they opted for standard-issue storm sewer inlets, then…[Read more]

I’m a big fan of stone in the landscape. I have a friend who asked me to create an Inukshuk for him as a tie-in to the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver (the logo). I was inspired to create a second one (shown here) using stone that had been laying around for decades in “spoil” piles around the iron range region in northern Minnesota.

I’m also interested to find out about an add-on program called Doodle. It looks promising. I’ll let you know. Thanks again.

Thanks RFox. I’m going to download a trial copy of Rhino and play around with it. I did that a few months ago with AutoCAD Civil and found the new interface pretty intuitive. I still need something that’ll be a simple interface with a landscape design focus. Right now, I don’t need super high-quality rendering capabilities, but I would like to…[Read more]

Thanks guys. I’ve seen many of the previous discussions on this topic. Reviewing my last post, I realized I had mentioned I had been running LandCAD. That part was true. However, I have not been using LandCAD. In fact, I haven’t used it for a single project. I couldn’t get out of the tutorial phase.

I’ve just started a one-person design firm specializing in residential. I’m trying to decide between the various cad programs and think Vectorworks would be the best fit for me. I have owned EaglePoint LandCADD (2000) but was running with its stand-alone cad engine (not AutoCAD). Now, years later, I’m really thinking it’s time to try again with…[Read more]

We can spec seed or sod species that tolerate, or thrive under, lower maintainance regimens. We can set up proper site conditions by including even simple soil profile requirements and mitigating soil compaction.

I’ve been working on awareness to lawns in general, and the incredible impact they have; mostly because they are ubiquitous. I believe any small change we can make to the design (less lawn, for one example) and maintenance (let them grow a bit longer and aerate them to allow permeability) of lawn areas would have a huge imact in water…[Read more]
