Testing the Waters

The back edge of my property was all turf when I bought it. This year I began the process of reducing the mowed areas and replacing with prairie/meadow plantings. Due the fact that I have neighbors and a neighborhood association I decided to test the waters first. The photo above shows the progress so far. Call it biotic release if you will, but I basically just quit mowing this area and established a curvilinear edge where it meets the mowed turf. This way I could gauge reaction from the neighbors and the city without investing money, time, and hard work into properly planting a local, native prairie seed mix. So far, so good. Although the old gentleman directly behind my property asked if I needed help with the mowing. I explained to him what I was doing and the explanation satisfied him. Assuming I hear no complaints through the end of the year, I will move forward this fall with removing the grass and getting the prairie started! Can’t wait to see how it turns out…
