Ive been out a couple of years and went to the career fair with another landscape architect who is a mentor of mine. I had never done this before and thought it would be a great opportunity to help some students with the interview process and give some pointers on their portfolios.
Wow!! These students are really good! I can see Ive got to step it up after seeing some of their work and the professional attitudes of the students. These guys are good!
Jim Burnett gave a nice guest lecture this morning featuring some of his work and gave some really positive points to students and all in attendance about the economy, landscape architecture and design. Clark-Condon and Lambert’s also presented some of their work and shared some of their insight with us. Very nice and informative.
The class of ’81 was there and had a positive forum discussion about how the market was when they got out of school. Twenty of twenty-six graduates came today to the reunion. Most are still in landscape architecture and they almost all commented on the solid education they received from Texas A&M and how a solid undergraduate in landscape architecture can prepare you for many of the economic challenges and responsibilities in life.
They encouraged all to do what makes them happy in life with work and they wont regret it down the road. They didn’t ignore how difficult things are economically, I was impressed by the candor and some of the struggle they admitted to in the pursuit of their dreams over the last 30 years. The overall effect was very good and positive I think for those like me who are starting out, the students and other professionals in the audience who have been in practice for years.
When I was is school I never really got involved with the career fair and I can see I missed out on some great encouragement, networking and opportunities to work with professionals.
I would encourage all students to get involved with these types of activities and for professionals to go back to help those students.
Kudos to all the students, professionals and instructors helped put this together!
