What do you think about "Draftsight" an alternative CAD Software?

I have been looking for a CAD program that is not only inexpensive, but interchangeable with AutoCAD DWG files. A friend recommended me to look into the new Draftsight beta software and I really like it so far! Now, I am interested to see if anyone else is using it yet and has opinions of it.

I downloaded the program about 2 weeks ago and I have used it only a little bit. But I don’t quite understand how the viewport system in paperspace works in the program. I’ll be interested to see what others say about it.

It is taking me some time to get use to the little details that is different then AutoCAD. I have been jumping projects back and forth to see how things work. In general I found it identical and my learning curve has been so smaller since I already know AutoCAD. When trying to learn other CAD program (like Vectorworks) in the past I always hit walls because how different they are and give up on them.

I even found that Draftsight is easier and more responsive to use then AutoCAD.

It does simple 2D cad work pretty well. There are issues with the current beta and printing though… It does use the same shortcut keys as AutoCAD so it’s an easy learning curve.

i like BricsCad..i can open current acad drawings plus old ones from the 90″s….full version is about $400.00….THERE IS ALSO A FREE 30 DAY TRIAL. sorry bout the caps….it’s the closest thing to acad I’ve seen…
