Energy from Plants?

A few years ago I read about a competition of future energy and one of the top winners was a guy working on a Photosynthesis Energy Converting System. After the study plants are supposed to transform 12% of solar energy into electric energy, while photovoltaic can only do about 7%?

Unfortunately I have lost any trace of that project and am now unable to find antyhing linked to it.

Is anyone of you aware of this technology?
