That looks a lot like freecycle in concept http://www.freecycle.org/ except, obviously, that the stuff’s not free! Have you ever used that? One problem I’ve come across is that the cost of landfilling is often less than what the cost of transporting materials to a new site would be. In Las Vegas, we are so far from other markets that we are limited in where leftover materials might go. Now, there is a surplus of materials here since building has slowed to a crawl. I’m taking a LEED-related class and was discussing this with the instructor the other day. Some of our recyclables end up getting shipped to China, adding a large carbon footprint along the way. As we know, current economics does not adequately reflect externalities.
