For what its worth, here’s my entry. I only started the project a week before the deadline and spent my free time working on the concept, so what I ended up presenting is what I would consider ‘concept graphics’ not refined renderings like many of the entries had. My mistake. Aside from the ribbon schemes, I think the scheme I chose of a rift or…[Read more]

I don’t think that’s Henry’s. If so, it’s extremely similar to my proposal.

Figures that a giant rendering would win. Heck even the developer didn’t like the winning entry. Competition Winner Snubbed by Developer. The one thing I do enjoy about all of these though is the ability to see all the entries and how different designers tackle the same problem.
Oh and for what its worth here is my entry. (I collaborated with a…[Read more] -

OK, guys, check out #1745 in the “Entries ” category – this is our own HENRY COHEN with a terrific design that proves what we are all saying, that it takes a Landscape Architect to really see a site properly – this is a great job, and a really nice contrast to that silly mirror…[Read more] -

The rest of the entries are weird, but I do sort of like the ones that make some big sculptural AIDS ribbon – sometimes a sculpture is better than a park, for something complex.. And it looks like a very tough site..Very tough..Perhaps an option would be to say, choose another site, like Olmsted the Great Father did..(sp?)/
But I also wanted to…[Read more] -

It looks to me that LAs are currently specifically listed along with CEs an PLSs and that the new language is more qualatative and up to some discretion regarding “qualified to perform”. I don’t see how that translates to expanded roles, unless I am mis-interpretting what I read.
Massachusetts has two bills stalled away. One that basically a…[Read more] -

This is what illustrator Guillarme pautrel (sp) has to say about competitions. Not that we didn’t know that ‘illustrations win competitions’ but imagine what kind of reaction this proposal would get rendered in pen and marker or even just linework. It might be laughable. I’m…[Read more]

Out of all the other entries, the winning concept is presented as a quiet and calming space, which memorials need to be. Though in reality, a house of mirrors may be too chaotic…
The idea that the space is the memorial and not some sculpture is interesting, but as mentioned already, it looks like any other plaza. Something has to be added to…[Read more]

In the designer’s defense regarding security, the memorials of this status in NYC tend to have security milling around or nearby keeping watch via video cameras. I can think of others, such as the Irish Hunger memorial, that are not entirely visible from the street. If it was open to the street, it would be noisier and less conducive to c…[Read more]

My edit disappeared, but I was going to say the honorable mentions look like a third year architecture student went nuts with 3D Studio Max. Some of these literally look like they started as a joke.
I will do another competition when the right one comes up. I’ve learned that one really strong image goes alot further than a complete package…heck…[Read more]

Clearly, architects have no clue what it takes to create a meaningful, spiritual outdoor space. Why do architects believe they can do every other discipline’s job better than they can? Oh wait, I know….huge egos are a job requirement for them.

It reads that way to me. Maybe its time to get licensed in DE. The state seems to be in slightly better shape economically and you still see building going on. My Dad lives there, and I realized from this article he’s only a mile or so from the board’s offices there. Lots of people who were priced out of NJ and southeast PA moved there in rec…[Read more]

The granite art walls are really compelling – I love the graffitti art movement and think it could be really cool. Plenty of other problems as everyone described from constructability to terrible security. Overall a bizarre, potentially nightmarish and narcissistic design with a meaning I can’t comprehend being related to AIDS.
On the other h…[Read more] - Load More
