Hi Terry,
My point is that you can become over qualified. Many employers will not hire you if you are overqualified for a position. They feel like you will stick around until you find something better. So unless you are going into research or a goverment position that requires a higher degree or you plan on teaching, arbitrarily making a de…[Read more] -

I’d want to know that you had direct experience in the construction of the types of projects that you would be about to manage. … mostly to know that the work crews and subs would respect your management.
I’d want to know how, how much, and how many people you have directly managed in construction in the past.
I’d be pushing a few buttons to…[Read more] -

I was an organizer for PARK(ing)Day in San Francisco in 2009. Myself and a group of other unemployed design professionals, designed, constructed, and operated a 3 hole miniature golf course for the day. It was a lot of fun and kept us busy during a very difficult year. I even managed to make it onto Weekend Edition on NPR for my 8 seconds of…[Read more]

It’s not that hard of an interpretation.
You’re not competing with the bear. You have to be better than the other guy to survive. Apple Inc. clearly wears sneakers.
Hell they make their own sneakers and throw them at the bear to taunt him. -

How many crew members did you manage as owner? Sounds like you were the sole designer…I also came into a new position about 4 years ago where I had to give up creating real designs that were pulled from the printer/off the desk to be immediately installed (still miss that so I know what you mean). The last statement probably is one that you can…[Read more]

Project Manager is a very general term. Landscape architects generally equate it to meaning “contract administrator”, but it is a term that means tons of different things to different people, different professions, and different situations. A design/build landscape contractor could use the term for a construction crew team leader, or a…[Read more]

I’ll give you my initial response and maybe you can help me formulate a better one.
I’d definitely miss the drive that comes from hard work that results in benefits to my bottom line.
I’d miss the flexibility that being self employed allows me (though this is only true in theory)
I’d miss implementing my designs. It’s very re…[Read more] -

Jonathan, Good to seek feedback on this. I would ask what you would miss most about your role as owner, while transitioning to project manager. For example, do you expect to find it more fulfilling to focus your role on projects (specific sites, crew, clients and design teams), rather than on the wider, less intimate, role of owner?

I own a design build company but have never worked for anyone else.

Andrew Garulay, RLA replied to the topic Why hire a landscape architect? looking for an article in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years, 7 months ago
The issue here is that there is a specific landscape architect with a specific potential client / specific project attempting to land the project using general marketing. This using a trawler instead of a flyrod to cath a single rising fish in a stream at a particular moment.
….. as thet say … “Match the hatch!” -

I hesitate to post it, but ASLA has some decent propaganda for you on the website. I don’t know if you have invesitigated there, but it’s worth it.

Long drawn out debates? I think you’re wrong about that. I don’t remember ever having long drawn out debates on land8. I challenge anyone to prove me wrong.

Yeah…I hear ya! I’m still pissed off about the football game 2 weeks ago. Why can’t my Chargers beat the Patriots?! Don’t answer. This is what happens when you do planning related work rather than creative, landscape designs. Its been over 3 months since I looked at a landscape plan or opened up Autocad.

Andrew,
While I get the story, it is also out of touch with modern times. Maybe I’m being too literal here. The preferred choice during a walk through the forest in bear country is “the greatest hiking boots”. Hiking boots like computers and softwares have evolved the last 20 years. I suspect the metaphor was written some 30 years ago. Choosing…[Read more] -
