Vectorworks. The 3D of Land-FX is Sketch-up.

That explains a lot! The technology used is the same, but architecture schools focus more on pure design and theory, something that is glossed over in many LA programs in favor of plants, grading and drainage, and other things. Many of the best LAs currently practicing were trained as architects. Laurie Olin and James van Sweden (though van Sweden…[Read more]

Well I could understand that; however, the requirements for the particular jobs I’ve seen have asked for either a degree in LA or architecure, which leads me to believe the position they have in mind is a staff LA.

Long Island is some of the best agricultural land in the country!!!.I don’t see what is wrong with that idea..Agriculture should be local, end of story..That concept could only require re-zoning – all of Southampton Town was zoned for 3-5 acre subdivision lots – just with the stroke of the pen, it could be returned to farmland – it is actually…[Read more]

Maybe they are trying to vertically integrate their practice / create a multi-disciplinary team. Maybe they also hire civils and interior designers. For example, for larger firms, it’s often times cheaper to have a lawyer on staff than it is to hire one sporadically. Maybe that’s the approach. If you have an architect on staff and they design one…[Read more]

Thanks for the idea, those seem like they would work great but living in Arizona I don’t know that I could find that type of plant unless I was able to find it in a store to buy somewhere.

At this point I don’t know the scale of the final model I’m just trying to collect information on how others have gone about creating and using various materials to represent plants.

The idea of creating an open share network of information on cities as a whole is very interesting. The collection of data when doing analysis work always seems to be the hardest thing to come by because there is no central location to go to get it. If these types of systems could be setup for our cities it would go a long way to improve design…[Read more]

Correction: NOT the snowball varieties (like ‘Annabele”) but rather the wild species is preferred

Thanks G and Ace, I don’t know how well written or well grounded it is. I just needed to purge my brain a bit. It’s a little disjointed and ranty but sometimes that’s what you need to clear out the ol’ RAM…

An excellent designer I used to work with preferred dried seed heads from Hygrangea arborescens (but the snowball cultivars, though). But it is hard to come by if you don’t have it growing in your own yard.

Stef,
If you are using a program that provides for .ifc export, it would then fundamentally export your site’s geometry out, and in some cases, information associated to those objects, and should come into Revit, as it also supports the import of IFC files. The IFC exchange has some growing to do, to include more site related objects, like plants…[Read more] -

Jason,
Thank you for the feedback.
Would you recommend product manufacturers convert their files into Vectorworks or Land-FX? Currently we have all of our products in SketchUp and we have converted about 10 products into Vectorworks.

Jordan,
Thank you for the response.
Do you have landscape architects on staff who use Revit as their BIM software? Is there another BIM program that comes to mind instead of Revit?

Eric,
I appreciate the feedback.
So, If I were to use a program that has the .ifc extension, in theory I should be able to import or work with it in Revit?
Thanks,
Stef -

Richard,
Thank you for your response.
Is there a specific program you use instead of Revit for your landscape documents?

I agree that Revit is “not quite ready for prime time” in landscape architecture. I was not meant to be. I’m sure if the market demanded, AutoDesk will come up with something.
In the mean time, the closest things to BIM for landscape architects are products like Vectorworks Landmark or Land-FX (a plug-in for AutoCAD or Bricscad) Both offer some…[Read more]
