I’ll have to disagree with a part of the group comment, that one about Martha Schwartz. It is perfectly justified what she said about UK’s landscape Architecture and the impossibility of the Landscape Architects from UK to overcome some bad habits. She pointed righteously at back garden culture and I’d top it up with slavery towards public’s control over L. Architect’s jobs. There are far too many consultations with the public, far too many people involved, and more who want to be involved in the design process. The freedom of professional expression is denied by the involvement of the councils’ so called “officers” who are anything but trained in any landscaping profession but who always have “the best” solution for any developments that happen. Of course, there are exceptions but it should be the other way round. The bad examples should be the exceptions.
@Alex… L.A. students are few and will be fewer by year.
    Why?
    1. Fees going from 6-7 grand per course to 7-8 grand per year starting with 2012.
    2. L.A. is a highly technical profession and UK’s children want to be actors, footballers, and artists… meaning anything that doesn’t involve hard work and brings you tonnes of money (presuming you are successful). Therefore, top universities don’t have such courses – there are no queries for this profession.
    3. Wages – UK’s L.A. are paid  change compared to  – let’s say US landscape architects. The average in UK is somewhere between 28-32K – in the public sector and starting with 25K or less in the private sector. Pathetic, isn’t it?
So.. who would want to be an L.A. when with the same skills and hard work you can be an Architect? The minimum for an Architect starts from 32K… Fortunately there are people who like the landscaping more that architecture but their numbers are falling down day by day…
There is more to say to this.. debatable though…
