I agree with nrschmid. There’s an assumption that if you’re getting an MLA (w/ no previous LA experience), that you have some professional experience that a BLA doesn’t. When I talked to the owner of a firm, he implied that someone with an MLA with business experience would earn more than an MLA with no business experience. Now, I would need to pitch my business experience as being applicable to the job, of course. Something like project management would be a lot more relevant than, say, computer programming.

That said, if you’re a BLA with more LA and life experience than an MLA, I think you can negotiate a better salary.
