In all honesty, do employers really pay great attention to your actual designs when reviewing a portfolio or do they mostly look at the ability to communicate your ideas?  I guess the reason I’m asking this is because I know my graphics, layout, cad skills, photoshop skills, 3D skills etc are pretty good but I feel like my designs are not that great.  My professors have always liked my graphics and layouts but when it came to the actual design, I was something average.  Even in Construction, I have great CAD work but sometimes the pieces don’t work out on detailing the complicated stuff. Keep in mind I have only recently graduated with my B.S. and I am fresh out of school looking for a job.  I want to know if employers prefer strong graphic skills and the ability to be fluid in the computer software as opposed to the actual design being that he will be looking at student work.  Thanks guys.

It can depend on the firm. A smaller firm in which you will likely have more immediate input may look closer at your design chops in the hopes that they can pass along some design work to you right away, as I did with my assistants. I didn’t want just a draftsman. If you are going to a mid-size or larger firm, you will be drawing other people’s designs for quite some time and having somebody watching over your details until you are there for a few years and prove yourself.  Most firms I have seen and interviewed with are really set with design (from the pricipals) and are looking for help with document production.
