Interesting article out of Great Britain about how the general public views the profession of Architecture. I found it rather interesting given recent discussions within our own profession.
It is a bit different between architecture and landscape architecture. We are burdened with the ‘landscape’ part which automatically put the pickiture in the public’s head that we are somehow involved with mowing their lawn or planting pansies.
I don’t feel bad for the British architects, I feel bad for the ingnorant 15% that do NOT KNOW that architects design buildings. That is kindergarten level stuff, first grade at the latest.
I’m comforted by the notion, which may reside only in my own head and no where else, that those whom are likely to hire either an architect or landscape architect DO know what each is, thus there is no benefit to us for the rest of the population to know. I take it one step further to believe that we will be more burdened with dead end leads should they find out.
I agree I would not want to spend the extra time it would take to get the 15% up to speed on things like cars, currency, cell phones, etc. Seriously, do these people live in caves? Someone that doesn’t know what architects do, will never hire an LA.
