Does anyone else feel that there is something not right with the format of the CABE guidance on Design and Access Statements. I feel that “Landscape Design” encompasses everything that is included in such a statement – massing, scale, access, use, biodiversity, sustainability – and have always had a bit of difficulty with the suggested sub-section on “Landscaping”. Usually given time and budget constraints I am glad if someone else is taking responsibility for writing the D+A and quite happy to provide a landscape statement to be slotted in…. but I feel that the structure perpatuates the idea that landscape design is an add-on rather than the design. Architects, Urban designers and Planners seem very loath to depart from the suggested format… does anyone have experience of structuring a D+A in a different way?
