New free Leaf Snap iphone app from Columbia University, University of Maryland, and the Smithsonian Institute helps people identify trees.
It is limited to the Northeastern US at this point, but presumably will reach out to other regions. Seems like a handy tool for field verification and perhaps broadening public engagement, although I am curious to see whether people will actual build inherent knowledge with it (i.e. I see that tree and know that it is a Gingko) or simply rely on the database (i.e. Google tells me it is a Gingko). Anyone have any experience with it, or using similar tools?
