Like a lot of people out there I have been having a difficult time landing a full time position as a landscape architect.  I was wondering if anyone has suggestions or advice on other positions in the environmental realm that can benefit a future career as a landscape architect.  Personally I would like to do work as a researcher on environmental processes, but have no idea how to go about that.  Any advice would be fantastic.  Thanks in advance.

I’m not sure how it works where you live, but in this area we have a great deal of both frsh water wetland and coastal wetland resources that are highly regulated whether you are working with a little cottage or a big subdivision or commercial project. Surveyors and Civil Engineers do a great deal of mitigation calculations, mitigation and restoration design, and presentation and negotiation at conservation commission hearings – they are the acting majority in conservation consultation for the masses while specialists fill in in certain situations. They also draw lots and lots of site plans. The only question is whether anyone needs to hire anyone else.

You actually have an advantage going into a small civil engineering firm over recent engineering grads. You’ve spent three years drawing site plans in studio which is two and a half more years than any of the 70+ resumes we received for such a position last spring – beat that home, if you get your foot in the door. … our job got fiiled.
