In the act of creating a sustainable landscape, many materials need to be removed. To get your removed, re-usable materials out of the waste stream and back into the hands of contractors post them on http://www.ContractorBoneyards.com.

After attaining my LEED AP credential, I realized infrastructure for simple wast diversion for smaller quantities didn’t exist. Please direct the contractors who bring your project to life to take advantage of this site to help increase your percentage of diverted waste for LEED credits.

That looks a lot like freecycle in concept http://www.freecycle.org/ except, obviously, that the stuff’s not free! Have you ever used that? One problem I’ve come across is that the cost of landfilling is often less than what the cost of transporting materials to a new site would be. In Las Vegas, we are so far from other markets that we are limited in where leftover materials might go. Now, there is a surplus of materials here since building has slowed to a crawl. I’m taking a LEED-related class and was discussing this with the instructor the other day. Some of our recyclables end up getting shipped to China, adding a large carbon footprint along the way. As we know, current economics does not adequately reflect externalities.
