Using 3D modeling as a way to research a site

Hello,

We have to come up with a Design Research Methods proposal for our project next term, selecting 2/3 research methodologies that we want to use.

I am keen to use 3D modeling, probably in Rhino, as a way of exploring and understanding my site. I was wondering if there are any good examples of this being done before? Or if anyone has any suggestions/comments?
