Position Overview:

The Planner’s main function will be to provide high-quality planning support to Cypress Environment & Infrastructure teammates, projects and clients.

This position is mid- to senior-level, for candidates with 5+ years of professional experience. AICP certification is preferred.

The goal of this position is to provide planning services related to various multi-disciplinary projects.  We execute ecosystem restoration, green space, parks, coastal structures, drainage, and water resources planning projects which could include: watershed management planning, green infrastructure, ecosystem restoration, coastal resilience projects, community spaces and greenways. Previous experience in consulting is preferred. This position may include limited southeastern US travel.

The Opportunity:

We are seeking a person who has strong background and a deep interest in multi-disciplinary planning work. We plan and design a variety of interdisciplinary projects and this role would support services to those projects and clients. We work with private, state, municipal and federal clients in support of industry, port operations, civil design, and ecosystem restoration. The ideal person is highly motivated to deepen their expertise in their field, develop as a leader, work with specialists in complementary disciplines and produce outstanding results for our clients while providing great service to team members in a collaborative atmosphere.

Who you will work with:

Cypress’s president is Cindy Henderson, an environmental engineer and professional wetland scientist with 21 years of experience in a variety of projects and working across government, academic, and private sectors. She founded Cypress in 2010 to provide quality design, modeling, and technical services to clients in the southeast.

Cypress’s vice president is Marc Foster, a planner with 28 years of experience in environmental planning, project management and GIS working with municipal, state, and federal clients. He joined Cypress in 2010.

The role includes being an:

·       Serve as task or project lead on planning projects

·       Active team member in the research, collection, and documentation of environmental, social, and economic data pertinent to projects

·       Active team member on planning projects providing report writing, analysis, conceptual design and GIS skills for larger planning, engineering or environmental efforts

·       Active team member coordinating and executing public outreach activities related to planning or engineering studies which may include interviews, charettes, or public meetings

·       Active team member in the preparation of explanatory materials for public dissemination and use

·       Active team member in the preparation of master planning and strategic planning documents

The anticipated field/office work split for this position is estimated at 5% field / 95% office.

A typical office day might include:

·       Attending team meetings to update other team members on project statuses and needs for assistance

·       Execute project tasks on 1-4 projects per day

·       Submitting project plan documents and interim products to staff mentor for reviews and feedback

·       Creation of professional technical reports and plans

·       Collaboration on design development for greenways, open space, green infrastructure,, stormwater management or other projects

·       Working with professionals in allied fields to combine expertise, develop designs, create report messaging or create data products

·       Meeting with clients to present project work or hunt for new projects

A typical field day might include:

·       Inspection of project sites to inform plan document development

·       Stakeholder engagement meetings

Minimum qualifications:

·       Bachelor’s Degree in regional planning or a related field, including but not limited to:

·       Community / regional planning

·       Landscape architecture

·       Coastal zone management

·       Water resources

·       Outstanding written & oral communication skills

·       3+ years of direct experience in: land planning, master planning, feasibility studies, city or regional planning

·       Experience with ArcGIS

·       Valid driver’s license and good driving record

·       Be able to carry 30+ lbs

·       Legally able to work in the US

Preferred qualifications:

·       5+ years of direct experience in: land planning, master planning, feasibility studies, city or regional planning

·       Demonstrated understanding of land use, environmental, and regional planning

·       Demonstrated success with published studies and public meetings

·       Consulting experience

·       Master’s degree in a relevant field

·       Charrette experience and/or certification

·       Understanding of basic environmental / ecological principles

·       Experience with Watershed Management Plans

·       Floodplain management experience

·       Experience mentoring and coaching junior staff

What this job is not:

·       Transportation planning.  This is not part of our business model at present.

·       NEPA. We do this type of work, but this position is for someone who wants to develop and execute planning reports and designs.

·       Environmental permitting.  We do this type of work, but are currently looking for a person with a pure planning focus.
