ALTAMAHA RIVERKEEPER JOB OPENING
JOB DEFINITION
The Altamaha Riverkeeper is responsible for monitoring the water quality of the Altamaha River and its 14,000 square mile watershed including the Ocmulgee, Oconee and Ohoopee Rivers; for advocacy and public education to prevent pollution and habitat degradation; for documenting identified threats to this resource; and for petitioning federal, state and local authorities to enforce compliance with all pertinent laws, regulations and ordinances for the protection of the watershed. Riverkeeper work includes education, outreach, organizing, and fundraising activities in support of water quality protection. The full-time position reports to the Executive Director who, in turn, reports to the Board of Directors.
QUALIFICATIONS
We seek an applicant who is passionate about water quality protection, river restoration, and the development and implementation of aggressive legal and political strategies to protect and restore water quality and aquatic ecosystems of the Altamaha River and its watershed.
The individual we seek must be willing to respond to and investigate citizen complaints, collect in-the-field evidence to document environmental problems, and advocate protection and restoration of water quality and aquatic ecosystems.
Excellent communications, interpersonal and organizational skills, especially writing and public speaking, diplomacy, the ability to inspire, and working well with others are required.
PREFERRED EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
A college degree or equivalent experience in biology, hydrogeology, environmental studies, environmental law or a related field as well as experience exploring and navigating rivers by boat is highly desirable. However, applicants with a combination of training and experience which would provide the knowledge and skills this position requires will be given consideration.
Fund-raising experience also a plus.
Successful candidate must be willing and able to operate a Riverkeeper vessel.
Work requires that the individual work outside for hours at a time with exposure to inclement weather, insects, and other outdoor hazards.
COMPENSATION
Salary is negotiable and will depend on qualifications and experience.
