I’m of the same mind, Stephen. I currently reside in Pennsylvania and am very discouraged by the lack of responses to my inquiries, let alone actual opportunities. A couple of action points to determine the Aussie market:
1. Sign up with Aussie recruiters (i.e. Hays Recruitment – http://www.hays.com.au);
2. Check out firm websites for available positions.
I have received e-mail notifications from Hays on a number of occasions with some interesting leads.
