May 21, 2013 at 6:19 pm #166063I agree whole heartedly with you! We need an overhaul and it needs to begin from the top down. Shaking things up is how America was discovered and conquered by a bunch of quakers and pilgrims who dared fight against the strongest and most powerful nation at that time. What happened in that scenario? The pilgrims won and now we all enjoy this great country called America! Its time for a Landscape Architectural Revolution by all of us pilgrims…

November 15, 2011 at 8:58 pm #159339This is perfect James! It appears that you have applied that saying in your own life with great effect! Thanks for sharing!
November 15, 2011 at 5:20 pm #159341I couldn’t agree more with your measure of success Robert! Thanks for sharing.
I too am measuring small daily incremental progression as successes. All your actions add up over time and contribute to your overall success. There is no such thing as an overnight success. Behind each successful person is a series of daily actions that led them to what we call “success”.
November 15, 2011 at 4:44 pm #159343a committment to excellence and a daily progression to your end goal.
July 18, 2011 at 6:55 pm #173332i agree that we need to put more time into figures and maybe some more style but we also mostly designers and they are not meant to be illustrative…Also Jim Leggitt uses alot of traced figures for more illustrations…but it just depends on who is drawing them…It depends on media, expression, style, and so many other things…maybe you could display some figures that you think are redundant and “Leggitt Like” so we can see exactly what we are agreeing and/or disagreeing with? How does that sound?
June 27, 2011 at 8:32 pm #162109I love your take on fonts! I too am a firm believer in using the right font type style to accentuate and enhance your brand. I think your font choice says alot about what your company represents. Although it is very subtle, and obviously, most people don’t get it, it makes a huge difference in perception and giving you the added wow factor that alot of people recognize but can’t quite put their finger on why it looks so good. I hope I am making sense. Its alot like great design. Great design, i believe, is design that doesn’t look design. It is the details and the subtelty by which a master designer designs space and all of the elements contained within. You can’t quite put your finger on why it is so good but it just is. Fonts are one of those great details that need to be seen as part of the sum of a whole. Other professionals should pay more attention to their composition in seeing that fonts are part of that composition.
On the flip side, if papyrus font is the right fit for any given composition then i say go ahead and use it. But I do agree that to just generically use it because it is some sort of a default font or you have seen others use it and like it then i would say that looking a little longer or investing in a more custom font is the best way to go.
Great post!
January 29, 2011 at 3:52 pm #165371This is my take as now being on the owner side of this profession…
Most owners know who is a good fit for them within the first few seconds of seeing a portfolio, or meeting someone face to face by their personality, portfolio, etc…
To me it makes no difference whether i see hard copies or an online “website”…I think it would be ideal this way to see a portfolio….
1- Send me a link to view your online portfolio (from this I would either be interested by what i saw or not and would want to either call you back or not)
2- If/when you meet for an interview you should ALWAYS have a hard copy of your portfolio or whatever you want to show a future employer….
3- Leave the hard copies and your website so they can look at it online…
Using both to your advantage in this world of technology is GREAT and IMPORTANT to me…I think it would be a shame to waste all these varied ways of communication through technology….i.e. – facebook, linkedin, land8lounge, portfolio sites, etc…
There are so many ways to brand yourself and market yourself these days that i didn’t have 10+ years ago when i got out of school that i would say USE them all if you can!!! The more you can get your name out there and brand yourself to whomever you are marketing to the better opportunity you will have in life, in general, and in your profession…
Might I suggest a few great books that i read lately that have nothing to do with portfolio building but rather connecting with other people…which, in essence, is all life is about…”CONNECTING WITH OTHER PEOPLE” Master this and you will have opportunities galore opened up to you in life…
The book are these:
Convince them in 90 Seconds or less
The One Minute Sales Person
Good luck to you!
December 10, 2010 at 10:20 pm #166442Thanks so much Ryan! Now my next question and a topic for new discussion is what strategies and tactics do you need to do to actually secure work from these sites???
Can you enlighten me on this question?
Thanks again for the info…I appreciate it very much!!!
December 9, 2010 at 4:34 pm #166497Why don’t you upload what you have and how you would present it so we can comment on it…That would help me see how you envision what you have and want to present…
I can then make more of realistic commentary and/or critique…
Look forward to seeing your work and how you would present it!
December 1, 2010 at 3:47 pm #166694I agree with this whole heartedly! I think with a pen or pencil in my hand! Computers are such a great help to us in our communication of ideas…but it all starts for me with a piece of paper and a pen or pencil…
August 12, 2010 at 9:46 pm #172956Nick,
I agree with you 100%!!! There is nothing better than being free of the perspective charts and sketching up something right in front of a client….
Thanks for your comment!
August 12, 2010 at 9:44 pm #172957the best education i EVER got on this subject was from a class i took from Richard Scott’s class…
see http://www.graphicsteacher.com ….he teaches you how to draw scaled perspectives at any size, viewing angle, etc at will…NO USE OF CHARTS….it was AWESOME!!!
I abandoned my Mike Lin Charts soon after this class cause of the freedom this new knowledge gave me…
Check it out!
