Great conversation and thoughts everybody.
For me I went straight to a design/build after graduation but that is because I wanted to go that direction. I also spent 3 summers in the field doing the labor prior to graduation. No experience with a design only firm.
Correct me if I’m wrong but in most cases I design only firm doesn’t begin to deal with contractors until the project is nearly complete and they are looking for bids. At this point no one is really wanting to have to make changes to a plan. Designers are usually running out of time on the project and contractors just want to get their schedules filled.
If the design firm were to bring in a contractor prior to putting the project out to bid, “for consulting,” could that start some sort of conflict in the bid process?
