Hate break the news to everyone, a landscape designer is a 2 year associates degree at most schools now so I wouldn’t consider anyone with a BLA a landscape designer. There needs to be a better tern for non lincensed LAs.

I agree with this completely. Your work should be what really matters, your title is just an ego boost

I think the author of this is misguided to say the least. While we may not technically be considered landscape architects, being called a landscape designer is demeaning since we have a college degree. I disagree with the statement that us “kids” out of school have zero knowledge or skills out of college. We clearly have many skills and a lot of knowledge since we just spent 4 years in school learning about the profession, we may have less knowledge and skills but saying none is ignorant. And it doesn’t matter if u call urself a RLA, LAIT, landscape designer, everyone thinks yo ur a landscaper anyways because no understands what we do.

This is a site Watervliet, MI.  It was an old paper mill spray field that was was left to turn into a brown.  Now it has been developed into an 82 acre industrial park.  This is a bad example because the whole reason it turned into a brownfield was because it was a site of industrial and all they did was clean it up to put more industry on it.  It may provide jobs but it is not doing anything to make the site sustainable or to prevent future problems.

This is the Chicago Center for Green Technology, it was built on an old landfill.  The site is 17 acres big and more than 600,000 cubic yards of construction materials and debris was dumped on the site.  The building was already on site and reused but renovated with sustainability in mind.  The building uses about 40% less energy than the typical building of that size with the help of solar panels on the roof and awnings, as well as in a lot behind the building. Part of the roof is a green roof with helps with runoff as well as energy saving.  Also the site is the most comprehensive educational resource in the Midwest for green technology and design, and sustainable building and living practices. The Center promotes and advances sustainable homes, workplaces and communities to enhance the quality of urban life through educational programming and training, research and demonstration and by acting as a resource network.  This is a good example because it not only meets all the LEED certifications for the building but it also helps to educate people on sustainability.

One model that i feel was unsustainable was the interstate or road system. While cars are a necessary part of our daily lives, roads gave us the freedom to move farther away from our jobs, shopping, friends, family, etc. causing suburban sprawl. While this may have been an advancement that couldn’t be contained, the results from this movement definitely negatively affected the environment and sustainability.

One model that i feel was sustainable was the public parks system. While most models are restricting to nature, this was one that was able to let nature flourish. Public parks got people out of their houses and gave them to enjoy nature without having to go out into the country, it softened the concrete jungle that they lived in.

i think a walk in the woods and the world without us are 2 good choices for books to read. Ive read a walk in the woods a few years ago for another English class, but not with the topic of sustainability in mind. It would nice to come at the book from another angle and see where i end up.
