i agree. i think i do pretty well at envisioning a space in my mind when designing, but this is always imperfect. I think it is extremely helpful to throw initial design ideas into 3ds to get a clear idea of what is working, viewsheds, scale ect… then pull back and design more. I think people should take advantage of the flexibility of using the computer + hand drawing. You can use it as much or as little as you like, i think that idea is something people (especially old school) get hung up on. To use the computer is not to sell your soul, at least in my opinion… hopefully i am not wrong about that one… if i am im in bad shape….
