Pat S. Rosend replied to the topic Artificial or Real turf for public spaces? in the forum DETAILS & MATERIALS 14 years, 4 months ago
Sythetic Turf fields currently have a standard 10 year life span. Sythetic Turf is more expensive to install but not as much as you might think.
For example a standard rectangle field with turf and irrigation runs about $800 k installed in our region (Mid-Atlantic)
A synthetic field runs around $1 mill. There are maintenenance savings, but not…[Read more]

I beleive concerns over Synthetic Turf are valid and should be investigated further, but I am not willing to throw out an entire product over a few very small studies.
It would be beneficial to see more and arger studies.

The correct industry term is Synthetic Turf.

Pat S. Rosend replied to the topic Will LAs always be at the mercy of architects? in the forum PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE 14 years, 4 months ago
Well we were required to take an architecture class and it gave me a general understanding of how buildings work and what an architect might be thinking when he is developing a design. It is very building focused as you would imagine. I would think that an overview of site design would give architects and appreciation for the nuances of site…[Read more]

I got a little off track on my response, but I really think it is a style of managment and not a communication issue. Not a lot of people think that every one involved in a project should know all of the details. It is a poor choice b/c many times I have been blindsided by information that could have been handled differently if we had known sooner…[Read more]

No, but many times clients prefer to work with more senior personnel. It is up to the managers to decide how much information is pertinant to the job or task in progress.
Some times things are confidential or extremly sensitive and you will just never get the info you would like or maybe even answers to why your proposed design won’t work. It is…[Read more]

IMHO your sense of frustration is partly due to the fact that you do not have all of the information for the ultimate project development and thus propose solutions that seem good to you but may not work due to some other constraints not known to you. This is very common and it is something that is still frustrating to me after almost 20 years of…[Read more]

This is exactly what LA’s do and should be doing more of. It is a shame that our own industry lacks the reputation within it’s own practitioner’s to move forward and be the experts in this aspect of landscape architecture. If we once again cede an area of expertise to another dicipline, then we will still be “just the landscaper”

I think it is a good idea to see the data behind the structure. LID is all the rage right now, but we are not certain how effective it is in all cases. Numbers data is especially important.

What type of job are you looking for? High design, design build? Municipal? Your portfolio should reflect the job needs.

Spmetimes temp is better than nothing. NPS is a great opportunity for LA’s to get a foot in the door.

Since you don’t know me or my efforts to promote LA. I will just let this one go. Sometimes you just want a small idea, not a big production. You have a different perspective and I hope it works for you.
Are you a sole practitioner or do you work in a professional office?

Well sometimes in the real world we have to just think quickly.
We have no small scale demographics for the site or for the whole county for that matter. We have not been approached by any user groups of interest and we can’t read people’s minds. We don’t have the resources to observe who uses the park (It is one of 417 parks in our system), we…[Read more]

The parks do have master plans, but this is outside the scope. Sometimes we just need to think small.

Well I don’t think they should be exluded form residential design, but I wouldn’t hire one to do a wetlands mitigation plan and design. I also would not hire an RN to do my open heart surgery.

Boy I would disagree with this. They may have a strong knowledge of planting and micro drainage but not large scale at all. They have limited exposure to site grading and the other engineering elements that LA’s are exposed too and really I consider them a subset of LA practice.

Pat S. Rosend replied to the topic How to repurpose a shuffleboard court in the forum SUSTAINABILITY & DESIGN 14 years, 6 months ago
Well that would be ideal of course, but we already know the needs of the park won’t be able to be met with a shuffleboard court. It was more an exercise in repurposing older park elements that went in to the site in the 1970’s and seeing if we can modernize them with little to no funding opportunity. We get a lot of requests for Eagle Scout…[Read more]

That is fun but is the chalkboard paint weatherproof? Kids use chalk to write on the ground directly w/o the paint. We could make window panes on the ground for art. That would be fun.
