Thanks for posting this interesting information. I wish I could attend the conference. We had a similar challenge when restoring and repurposing a prison that was transferrred to our agency. It is a complicated development of private/public deelopment that seems to be working well for our community.

I have tried, but I don’t like it either. It took me three times visiting to figure out where the forum was. I think that is one one of the best parts of the site. It has really been minimized, to the site’s detriment IMHO.

The problem arises if you need to do a WL install and a meter. In my county a 3′ water meter is $80,000. Plus the cost of the line work itself.

The park plan has outdoor event space and small gathering spaces around the perimeter. It has a playgorund area and a trail network.

I am going to disagree a bit with you here. Parks serve many roles. not all have recreation opportunities. Many parks serve other functions. I think it is the term park that brings a certain image to mind.
It is true that the public thinks of parks as places to go do something in, but our parks serve many other purposes.

A 2x multiple on employees is not being greedy. That is going to barely cover your overhead and make a small profit. When I was in design build, we had a minimum 3x mulitple for costs to billing. 4x was optimum.
Single proprietors are able to make do with less, but they do not create many additional jobs that way do they…

The profession should mandate a 10 year license limit. Everyone has to retake the exam after holding the RLA for 10 yrs.

I think an MBA in Economics is a great idea. You will find it of value whether you are an LA or not. Many LA’s would benefit from business/economic knowledge.

I have to say this is certianly an example of Hyper Design. I think they could cut back a bit on the paths.

I meant a non-office job like design/build. I did not mean to imply that it is not part of the LA realm. I have done both. I don’t see many design/build professionals complaining about hours or pay. It is sell or be gone. Pretty simple. You change your perspectives about art and client input pretty quickly under those circumstances.

Umm. As a municipal employee and long time taxpayer in VA I can tell you there is not actually a budget surplus in VA. It is smoke and mirrors and is dependant on stimlus funding for transportation. The current Republican governer seems to have forgotten that.

like the idea of keeping a Master Job list for design work performed, but that seems more appropriate for marketing to a client rather than something to show a potential employer.

A future employer is your most important client! You absolutley must market yourself. It not a skill we are taught in school, but it is one you should embrace.

I use it all of the time, but I never did in private practice. I think government work uses it more. It is a very expensive package and many firms just don’t want to pay the price. As an FYI, we did a study of license exams a few years ago in my office and it turns out the PE exam is all multiple choice. No drawing. It probably explains why engineers can’t grade 🙂

It depends on what employment track you are planning on taking. For Office/Municipal I would recommend an AICP cert. For design/build I would go more construction certification/project manager. Certified Playground designer is also good for somethings. I have seen little value in LEED for design/build or municipal works. Maybe more in private…[Read more]
