Thank you very much for the support!
It means a lot for TROP, a tiny studio in the middle of nowhere, ha ha.
November 21, 2008 at 7:13 am #176059Pok KobkongsantiParticipantDear Claudia
First, congrats you for the coming graduation!
I must say that you have a great idea, even though I don’t understand much of how Non-profit firm works. In Thailand, we rarely have community park in each neighborhood.
When one is lucky enough to get some money, the project usually is designed by government’s officials or someone who got connections with the government.
As the result, design is not their first concern. So I think it’d be great for the community to have a capable team.
Of course, financial-wisem, it’ll be difficult to get good designers willing to work for low salary.
But I think it’s worth a try!!About the economy crisis, it’s coming soon to Asia, I think.
Hong Kong and Singapore are slowing down now.
Thailand’d be next, I guess.
Hopefully, China won’t go down. Otherwise, this crisis will be much worse than it is right now.November 19, 2008 at 5:02 am #176091Pok KobkongsantiParticipantNick
Of course, there are many firms that needs foreign talents like yourself.
Some big firms got their branches in China now, EDAW and Belt Collins for example.
I don’t know about the economy issue right now, but a lot of Thai designers are working in the area.September 16, 2008 at 11:28 am #176751Pok KobkongsantiParticipantI do like Pete Walker’s Invisible Garden.
A bit of history though…..July 30, 2008 at 11:06 am #177235Pok KobkongsantiParticipantHere is my old sketch from 2004….It’s for a casino in Singapore…
July 28, 2008 at 6:29 pm #177239Pok KobkongsantiParticipantFor Hand-rendering, I would have to say Chris Grubbs (not sure how to spell his last name).
Every famous landscape architect uses him.
Hargreaves started using him years ago.
Then Pete Walker.
Even SWA!!
His rendering is superb. A master in his own style!!!July 28, 2008 at 7:22 am #177335Pok KobkongsantiParticipantDepends on how much amount of work for the program.
At GSD, some studios require a team work, because there is soooo much information.
Design-wise, I prefer individual work, because each student will have freedom to explore what he/she is interested.
Both are good anyway though….July 28, 2008 at 6:35 am #177618Pok KobkongsantiParticipantAgree with Les.
The other big reason for that is salary issue.
New landscape architect, coming out of undergrad degree, usually gets about 4-600 US$ a month.
While is Singapore and Hongkong, they will get 3-4 times that amount.
Living cost is different, and plays an important factor for that salary difference.
Thailand’s living cost is much much cheaper than Singapore and Hongkong though…..
….
In my firm, salaries is a bit higher than average, and I pay for Bonus at the end of the year instead.July 21, 2008 at 4:07 pm #177326Pok KobkongsantiParticipantThe only landscape designers who do great financially is the ones who have their own company.
If you just graduate, in my oipnion, I think you better look for the firm that can give you good experience first.
No way you can pay your debt in your first couple years.
Why don’t you work with famous designers, learn your lessons, and finally work on your own?
This case I think you can pay faster. -
