Ty,
That’s a great story. I have a hard time selling natives to clients who don’t know or care (or know that they should care!). One of my clients wondered if a wild plum tree was a coffeeberry bush, then I knew what my problem was. I have to be a salesperson first. A few pictures of a gorgeous Julia Phelps Ceanothus combined with a cheerful bush poppy were enough to do the trick. But pushing the birds and butterflies usually helps. Also, regarding the tropical effect, I love native Calycanthus (Spice Bush) and chain fern (Woodwardia) in dappled shade for a verdant green background for tropicals on a slope. The toe of the slope gets the moisture (for tropicals) and the top stays dry, but looks lush.
