The next set of images display the cultural landscape, and the elements that define its character in East Central Illinois.
In this image is the drainage ditch. The landscape here is one of the youngest in the world, with the glaciers retreating only over 15,000 years ago. The landscape still hasn’t developed a stratified hydrologic system from this former swamp/inland sea. Drainage ditches and tiles cut deep lines through the earth, reflecting the sky in the land.
