This large raised deck was built on the remains of a previous brick/paved raised terrace which was in a bad state of repair. A softwood timber joist frame was built on top of the existing terrace and cantilevered over an area of lawn to increase the area. Softwood timber deck planks were screwed to the joists and were stained with deck oil. The vertical edges of the deck and a full-width step were clad in stainless steel and perimeter balustrade and flight of steps were constructed from galvanised steel to give a contemporary industrial feel. A Rhus species tree was planted in soil in the underlying paved terrace to provide some shade on this south-facing deck.
